Stay Safe ->Money Saving Tips
Split Payments Over 200 RMB
Many Chinese apps have 200 RMB foreign card limits. When paying large amounts, ask to split into multiple payments or use cash for big purchases.
Book Trains 2 Weeks Ahead
High-speed train tickets open 15 days before departure. Popular routes sell out fast. Book on Trip.com or 12306 as soon as tickets are released.
Avoid Tourist Restaurants
Restaurants near major attractions charge 2-3x more. Walk 2 blocks away for authentic food at local prices. Look for places full of locals โ that's where the good food is.
Use ATM, Not Exchange Counters
Airport currency exchange rates are 15-20% worse than ATM withdrawals. Use your bank card at any Chinese ATM โ you'll get the real mid-market rate.
Metro Over Taxi
City metros cost 2-10 RMB per ride. Taxis start at 13-14 RMB and surge in traffic. For most trips, the metro is faster AND cheaper.
Free Walking Tours
Many cities offer free English walking tours. Find them on Meetup, Couchsurfing, or ask your hostel. Great way to see the city and meet other travelers.
